“Killed at Gettysburg: Horthere Fontenot, 8th Louisiana”

Killed At Gettysburg has a great write up of one of Opelousas’ “Opelousas Guards” - Horthere Fontenot. You travel the Opelousas, Eunice, Ville Platte area today you will still find MANY Fontenots! Horthere joined the Opelousas Guards in 1861 with his brothers. Their company became Company F of the 8th Louisiana Infantry. The 8th Louisiana fought in the Virginia theater the entire war; most of that time in the 1st Louisiana Brigade of the II Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. Veterans of 1st Manassas, Jackson’s Valley Campaign, the Seven Days, 2nd Manassas Campaign, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the 8th Louisiana was a tough veteran unit marching north to Gettysburg in June 1863.
